Richard Hatch on Survivor Season 41

Came across this You Tube video by Richard Hatch, the winner of Survivor Season 1. He has a really interesting perspective on Survivor and host Jeff Probst. I always liked Richard, and found his take very refreshing. As a non media super fan (I have never missed an episode, but stay away from all spoilers and outside noise), this was a very good look at Survivor from the point of view of somebody who played and really understands the game

Think I am going to try and get him to sign one of the personal Survivor cards I made a while back

Quick update – Music I’ve been listening to

Was listening to the Marillion channel on Pandora and heard a song by the band Riverside. Looked them up on Apple Music and found out they are a Prog Rock band from Poland and have been around for a while and have a lot of albums.  I Decided to listen to a few and am really impressed. Will defiantly listen to them some more.

Glad to see that October Project has a new single out called Rage of Days.  Am I big fan of there early albums and its great to finally hear a new song.  Highly recommend you check out the song and then take some time a listen to their 1st two albums

Somehow I have seen a lot of posts / videos of songs by Canadian rock trio Triumph.  They have reminded me of what a great band they are.   Went back and listened to their “Sport of Kings” album.  Brought back some great memories of college as I has the cassette and must of listened to it a hundred times in my car (especially during a road trip with friends to the University of Vermont)

Men Without Hats have a new covers album which includes a re-imagined version of “The Safety Dance” called “No Friends of Mine”.   I’m a fan of theirs and their “Pop Goes The World” album is one of my all time favorite albums of all time.  Good to see them still around and doing well

Other bands I have been listening to when going for runs / walks are Iron Maiden (Really like their great new album Senjutsu), Scorpions (They have a new album coming out soon),  Toto (Forgot how many great songs they have) and The Kinks (Don’t know why, but am hooked on the song “Come Dancing”)

Will try to keep track of and post more bands and songs I come across during the days and post them here.

Go out today take a few minutes to tune out all the noise and bad news and put on one of your favorite bands or songs.  Really soak it in and you will feel a lot better.

Have a great Monday and the rest of your week

A little different – The craziness of looking for a job

Its been a tough and crazy year so far. Back in March 2021, my contract with Bloomberg (IT – Data Retention Specialist) ended. Since then I have been out of work and looking for something exciting to do for the next step of my career.

After I graduated from Lehigh University, I starting off working for the Department of Defense as technical engineer and then after taking some time off to drive cross country with some friends (will dig into this in a future post), I ended up with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) where I was a field engineer working on hazardous waste cleanup sites throughout the state. After taking a 4 month furlough to attend NYU Film School and getting Certificate of Filmmaking I returned to the NJDEP where I became the office IT Support guy as computers were just really starting to become mainstream and I new more them most of my coworkers.

One of my first breaks came when I saw an add for Windows Server Training with Prudential Insurance. They were offering 8 weeks of free training and certification and then a position within the company. I completed the training, got my MCP Certification and ended up working for Prudential on some great projects including Y2K until they changed everybody schedules to 3 twelve and a half hour days, and then 4 days off so that they could provide 24/7 coverage. During my later years at Prudential, Survivor The Amazing Race, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire all made their debut. A somebody with a free spirit I remember telling my co-workers to remember me as one day I will be on one of these shows (I actually passed the addition test for Millionaire and added to the contestant pool, but was never chosen). As for Survivor and The Amazing Race, I have applied many times over the years and continue to apply today, keeping my hopes and dreams alive (I have written all about this on this blog over the past 10+ years – Go back and read some old posts if your interested)

I left Prudential for a new position with CIT (a financial lending company). I worked there for 12+ years, starting as a Windows Server Support Specialist, and then moved to Backups, Restores, and Storage. During my tie with CIT, I made lots of friends and they all new I was obsessed with getting on Survivor. One of my co-workers is who set up this blog (averageandy.com) so that I could write about my Survivor journey. I am grateful to him for giving me this opportunity and it has been very therapeutic to write about my life, Survivor, and my other passions like Non-Sport Card Collecting.

At CIT, I always tried to have fun. I would post trivia questions on my instant messenger, and put up team schedules (NY Giants, Lehigh Mountain Hawks) and concert ticket stubs on my cubical wall. I joined the company intermural Golf and Tennis Teams, and overall just tried to make sure to have fun at work. While some people though I was a bit crazy, and a little strange at times, I believe most people enjoyed a little fun during their days. Eventually CIT did some reorganization and I was let go. In hindsight this was a blessing as I had become a bit complacent and comfortable with my job and it was time for a change.

I ended up working for NBCUniversal out of there Technical Support Building. It was quite different working for a media company after CIT. Things were much less structured and regulated. We were allowed to be much more hands on and creative which I really appreciated. Again, I let people know I wanted to be on Survivor (Which was funny since Survivor is on CBS, and here I was working for NBC). Working in Information and Technology, were were separated from most of the entertainment side. We did have a few Christmas parties on the Saturday Night Live Stage, which was pretty cool. I do wish I would have at least reached out to somebody in the entertainment division just to see if they knew or had any contacts / connections with somebody associated with Survivor. After 3 years, the contract I was working under was not renewed as NBC decided to go with a cheaper company. I spent the last 3 months of my time at NBCUniversal writing documentation and training people to take over my job when I left.

After some time off, where I started to realize how much job hunting has changed, and how most of the resources I used were outdated and obsolete, I was able to get a consulting position with Bloomberg as a Data Retention Specialist. Things started off good and I enjoyed my day to day work. But then I got moved to another office 80 miles from where I lived. I have had long commutes before, but the jobs were exciting and in interesting locations. The new office was in a office park with nothing around, and my team members were mostly at the other office so I was basically by myself every day. As I was finally getting settled and coming up with a routine, COVID came along and everybody was told they had to work from home unless there was a business reason to be on site. There were a few times where I did need to go to the office but most of the time I was logging in from home. Bloomberg’s policy is contractors work from 1 year and then are replaced. Due to COVID, my contract was actually extended a few extra months, but it eventually ended in March 2021

This brings us all the way back to the beginning of this post. Its been a interesting six months between a my father in law passing, my daughter being home all summer before heading back to college for her senior year, and looking for a new job.

When I sat down to write today, I was just going to go over how the process of looking for a job has changed over the years and the things I like and dislike. As you can see I went off on a tangent for a while but that is just what came to my mind so I let it flow. Now that I’m back on track its time to talk about looking for work in 2021 and what I feel is wrong with the current system. I am not mad, or bitter, and understand that everybody is responsible for there own success and failures, but it is a bit crazy that most people looking for full time white collar jobs are evaluated on a single sheet of paper (resume). Actually in some cases who gets hired on a job can be decided on just a few questions on an application. Do you know python? Yes and your hired, No and good luck elsewhere

I wonder if companies look at resumes or the answers to questions after they hire somebody to make sure they know what they say they did. Or do they figure once your hired, you will learn on the fly. I have seen positions filled and then the person realizes this is not what they wanted or expected, so they leave and the hiring process starts over. Meanwhile there were plenty of people who applied and would enjoy the job but they were never even considered because they did not have the correct buzz words on there resume. The fact that somebody is passionate about a company and its values, or feel the position is a perfect fit for them seems less important then somebody who lists all the systems and application they know on there resume (logging on to a Server, or using Exchange for your E-Mail does not make you a Server and Messaging expert).

There are hundreds of people and websites out there that say they will help you craft the perfect resume for a job you are interested in. They will let you know what format to use, what key words to use, and what past accomplishments to highlight. They will run scans on your resume against the job descriptions to make sure your the perfect match. It becomes almost a game to see if you can figure out how to get to the next round. For someone like me, who has never been good at promoting myself in writing, gut instead feeling that if you just take a few minutes to get to know me and what skills and attitude I can bring to the company and position, you will see I am a good fit. I am also have never the best with anagrams and business jargon in general. While I know there are hundreds of different hardware and software vendor with multiple models and applications, I get confused if somebody asks the difference between things. I’m more of a generalist (These are all OS, Database, Storage,…). I understand the concepts but have a hard time explaining things in a technical way.

You are also told that the key to job searching is to build your network You are told to reach out and connect to everybody you know on sites like LinkedIn in hopes of finding somebody in the company you want to work for that can help you. And while most people are open and willing to help (If somebody reached out to me, I would do all I could to help them), I have some trouble asking. I realize its just a internal fear of being annoying or being rejected, but its their and it makes things that much harder for somebody like me to get in the door.

I have been writing for a while and its time to take a break. I will take some time to re-read what I wrote to see if there are things to add, and continue this posts soon

In the meantime, anybody who read this all the way to the bottom and happens to have any connections with CBS or Survivor, please reach out to me. Also, since while waiting on the producers of Survivor to reach out to me, I do need to find a job, so anybody who knows of any opening for an older IT Professional looking for a server support position (Installing, Upgrading, Troubleshooting,…) please reach out to me at andyrupprecht@gmail.com or 908-963-1937

Its getting towards the end of a Friday, so enjoy your weekend (If you have off)

Congratulations to Xavier for winning Big Brother 23

What a great season of Big Brother. Really enjoyed watching this season and was glad to see Xavier be chosen as the winner. I want to also congratulate all other members of the cookout alliance (Derek F., Azah, Kyland, Hannah and Tiffany). I found it fascinating how they came together with a plan to get everybody to the final 6 and then actually stayed loyal to the plan at the expense of each ones personal game. There were several opportunities for somebody to turn on the others but nobody did even though they had formed tight bonds with other contestants.

What I really liked is although the cookout was formed to assure a African American would finally win Big Brother, it never felt like a us vs them, or any other sort of racial divide between the black and white players. To this I give all of this years contestants a big applause. To me it showed the passion for the game and I respect how all the players appreciated each others game play. It made my happy to see the diverse cast play to win, but at the same time respect each other, and this is something the rest of country should be looking at and trying to copy.

Thanks for CBS for taking a look at themselves and making some changes to there casting – This season showed that regardless of the color and race of the contestants, if they are good players and respect the game and each other, people will watch and appreciate them.

Both Big Brother and Survivor have evolved and now appear to be more true to there original premise where it was a bunch of people looking for a one in a life time unique experience and a chance to push themselves beyond there comfort zone instead of people looking to use the shows as a platform to promote themselves to the world hoping for fame and fortune. Everybody who plays both Big Brother and Survivor knows there is a big prize at the end, but its refreshing to see players who enjoy the game, the people, and the experience, and were genially happy for Xavier and Derek (and Tiffany) regardless of the fact they didn’t win themselves

Not a big fan of celebrity anything (Nothing against the celebrities on the show, just don’t really care if they win or lose) so I probably will skip the upcoming celebrity season of Big Brother, and will be waiting for next summer for the return of the real Big Brother

Not its time to get into this season of Survivor (Enjoying things so far this season), Also have another season of Tough as Nails, as well as the return of The Amazing Race, as well as the return CSI:Vegas, so my TV will be recording a lot of CBS shows.

Hope all is well

Big Brother, Survivor and the fall of the New York Giants

Another season of Big Brother comes to an end tonight and for the first time, there will be a person of color as the winner. Thought this season was really good and really respect all the contestants praise for the Cookout Alliance and what they were able to pull off. Most alliances of more than 2 people fail because everybody deep down is playing an individual game and eventually they make a move that helps them while breaking up the alliance. Was interesting to see how all the members of the Cookout were able to stay true to their collective goal, and make moves to keep the alliance moving forward while sacrificing there individual game. It would be fascinating to study this season from a cultural point of view. Good luck to the 3 remaining players (Azah, Derek F., and Xavier). All deserving of being this years winner.

Sitting down last Wednesday to watch the Season premier of Survivor, I realized how much I love the show and how much I missed it not being on. Right from the start I was engaged and ready for another great ride. I actually liked most of the new changes introduced. I was not really upset about Jeff retiring “Come on out guys” although I did think it seems a bit forced. I doubt there were many fans of the show who stopped watching or never watched because of this. Honestly I never even thought about it any way. Sometimes when things are brought to the attention of people who never gave a thought (one way or another) it turns it into a bigger deal, which can be counter productive. Had Jeff (or Survivor) just got rid of the phrase, without mentioning it, there might have been a few tweets about it but then it would just be forgotten. Now it has become a big story and created a divide which is what you didn’t want to do. Am I personally going to stop watching, or aggressively try to get new people to watch due to this? No. I’m going to write about it on this blog, and most likely look back years from now and think – Remember when they changed Jeffs intro and it was a big deal. Thank goodness we got over things like this and realized that we were wasting everybody’s time and energy on such a trivial matter.

Looking forward to tonight’s episode and getting to know the players a bit more. Will be fun to see if the shortening of the days from 39 to 26 makes any difference with the show. Also will interesting to see if anyone decides to risk their vote for safety and how that will effect the game.

Still waiting to hear back from the producers about my current application. As an older white male, I may not be in any of the desired demographics, but with my personality, knowledge, and true love for the game itself, I believe I have enough qualities to at least get a chance to speak to somebody and show them what I have to offer, and how I would be an asset for a future season.

As for my New York Football Giants, things cant get any worse. Even I as a diehard fan (I can count on one hand the number of game I have missed going back as long as I can remember), I have come to conclusion that they need to make some sort of change soon, or things will get ugly real fast. Right now they are stuck in a losing mentality and do not know how to win games. Continuing to say the same thing week after week (We need to get better, we need to execute better, We need to make better decisions) is old and sounds like every other bad head coach on a bad team. When you can’t admit to yourself what you are doing is not working, and seem to blame everybody else but yourself, you are doomed. I give coach Tom Coughlin credit. After taking over for Jim Fassel in 2004, the Giants went 6-10. The following year they went 11 – 5 and this started a stretch of decent football (Including 2 Super Bowls). I do remember after Coughlin’s 1st year writing about how he was clueless and out of touch with the players. Then something happened. Coughlin changed his ways. He started to loosen some of his rules and better relate to the players. The Giants started winning and Coughlin went on tto win 2 Super Bowls and have a Hall of Fame career.

https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2016/01/05/tiki-barber-tom-coughlin-giants/

The Giants have the wort record any team in the past 5 years. They never score, and at times it feels like pulling teeth just to get a few 1st downs. They are unimaginative on offence, and clueless on defense. Head coach Joe Judge looks lost with no feel for his team and the game of football – almost every team can go from their own 25 to field goal range in less then a minute in 3 or 4 plays. Happens all the time due to the way the game is played these days. The prevent defense might have worked 20 – 30 years ago but is a ticket to lose today. So unless Joe Judge looks deep within him self and makes some real changes, he will be gone, and the Giants will continue this downward spiral until they find a head coach who is open minded, understands today football, and can relate to the players

Hope everybody is doing well and enjoying the last few weeks of summer.

Survivors Back for Season 41

Survivor returns tonight (Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021) for its 41 Season after a long break due to the pandemic. While I don’t like to see or hear anything about a new season and try to avoid any social media stories or posts, I have seen Jeff Probst talking about big changes for this season and seasons going forward. I have heard that the contestants will be stranded for 26 days instead of the standard 39 days. Other than that, I really now nothing and will be watching tonight with an open mind

You all know I have been a Survivor fan since the beginning (I actually heard about the show before it even aired its 1st episode) and it still gets me excited every time a new season starts. I have never missed an episode and will continue that streak tonight. I have likes most of the twists, turns, and changes over the years and like how the produces (and Jeff Probst) are constantly changing things up to keep the game fresh. The changes I didn’t particularly like were ones that gave advantages or safety to players that allowed them to continue playing even though the tribes and other players played a perfect game to get them out. (i.e. Extinction Island, and others where people got a second chance, or the fire challenges to get to the final 3). While I liked the ideas, I felt they just penalized good players and gave lesser players a better chance that they really did not deserve. But it it what it is and I am really looking forward to how the mix / change things up for Season 41

Its hard to imagine that Survivor has been on for 20 years and was in production prior to that.  Here is the link to the 1st thing I ever heard / saw about Survivor from 1999 (SlashDot – Survivor to give 1 Million Dollars to winner)

From that point on I was hooked and dreamed of one day being on the show and claiming the title of Sole Survivor. I remember watching season 1 from hospital when my daughter was born – She is now a 21 year old college senior), to franticly setting up a VCR to properly tape the show when I had other things to do when the show was on. I remember when the show would be interrupted by the NCAA Basketball Tournament and was eventually moved from Thursdays to Wednesday (One of greatest move CBS made). The show has been a constant in my life and I am truly grateful for the show and everybody involved (past and present) who have worked to create the gold standard of Reality Shows

I have applied numerous times, from when there was a multiple page application that you needed to download and fill out, and send in with your application video (actual VCR Tape) and a passport photo. I remember running out of work at lunch time to get to the post office and get my application sent out before the posted deadline. As the internet evolved (it was relatively new when Survivor started) and the application changed to where it was on-line and you could upload a copy of your video, I continue to apply. I even posted a video when there was a on-line contest / vote to pick a player (I believe it was Troyzan) who won. I even went to a Open Casting Call in Atlantic City and hade a great time while waiting in line with all of the other Survivor fans

One of my later application videos was done with the help of my daughter for one of her classes (She is studying film in College). She needed to make a short documetary style film, so I went back and found all of my old applications and she put them all together in a time line montage. When she showed it to her class, they all enjoyed it thought I had a chance. I was really happy with it and sent it off to casting. While so far it hasn’t worked out, there is plenty of time left for me (even at 54 years old) to continue to send in applications with the hope that somebody sees it, likes it, and decides to give me a shot (thats all I can really ask for)

So I will again be at my TV tonight (8:00 PM EST on CBS) watching the 2 hour premier and feeling like things are back to normal as Survivor is on and all if good in the world

Be sure to check my older posts about Survivor (Including the list of things I would do with the Million Dollar prize) as well as other things that interest me (Sports, Music, TV, Non-Sport Card Collecting)

I’m sorry I haven’t written in a while. Had other things going on that had a higher priority. But I should be good to go now and look forward to putting my thoughts down on these pages

I do want to give a big shout out the all the members of the Cook Out on Big Brother. They played an incredible game and should be really proud of themselves. Besides guaranteeing an African American will win this season, they showed how the game can be played if everybody works together for a common goal and this will be studies and replicated for seasons going forward. Great for the game

Promise to write more soon

Toto and The Bad New Bears in Breaking Training

Went on a nice walk yesterday, and decided to mix things up and listen to Toto.   Put on “Toto Esentials” and was amazed on how many great songs they have.  Some songs I havent heard in a long time (Such as “I’ll Supply the Love” and “Georgy Porgy” and one of my favorites “Stranger in Town”).   Also realized what a great solo and jam are in the song “Rosanna”  Very much enjoyed it and will definatly listen to it again.

As a side note, SiriusXM’s poll of the day was Songs With Numbers In The Titles, and “99” by Toto received a lot of votes.   Always amazed when things like this happen.

Also, while out walking, not sure why, but I thought of one of my all time favorite movies “The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training”   Thinking of certain scenes always puts me in a good mood, and makes me laugh.  When I got home, I dug out my DVD copy and decided to watch the entrie movie from begining to end.  And was just as good as it always has been.

There are so many great scenes in this movie, including the “Let Them Play” scene in the Astrdome with the Houston Astro Players, and Tanner Boyle (Christopher Barnes) running around trowing the bases at the umps. All time classic.

As I have mentioned numerous times, Tanner Boyle (Christopher Barnes) is one of my all time favorite movie characters. Shortly after the Bad News Bears movies, he pretty much dissapered from Hollywood. There have been some reunions with members of the cast, and Panini America even put out a Card Set (including 6 autograpth cards) but now Tanner Boyle.  I have been trying to find a way to contact him to let him know how his performance has stuck with me for more than 40 years. I do have a custom card of him, and would love one day to get it autographed by Tanner himself.

I know this is a random post, but its whats on my mind, so its what I am going to write about

More to come

What would I do if I won Survivor

Survivor returns September 22nd for Season 41. As you know I have never missed an episode in all this time – 540 episodes. I will be back in front of my TV on September 22nd to go on another journey with 16 new contestants.

Hopefully one day, I will be part of the next group of 16 to play the game of Survivor. I have always wanted to be on the show, and have applied numerous times, including recently summitting my application for Seasons 42 / 43.

While I honestly want to go for the adventure, to be pushed out of my comfort zone, and to prove to myself that dreams can come true, I also want to Win the title of Sole Survivor

Over the past 20 years, I would think of what it would be like to win the $1,000,000 prize. I realize that these days, $1,000.000 will not set you up for life, and I am not thinking of retiring any time soon. So while I continue on with my life, here is a list of things I would love to do or buy with the money

1. Go to the Philly Non-Sport Card Show and buy the William Shatner / Leonard Nemoy duel autograph card from the Rittenhouse Star Trek 35th set. I have all of the other autos but this one has always been outside of my budget

Kirk_Spock

Shatner / Nimoy 35th

2. Along the same line, I would love to purchase the Jackie Earle Haley (Kelly Leak) Panini Autograph card. I have all of the other Bad News Bears auto cards (including the Tatum O’Neil (Ammanda Whurlitzer) card. Would be great to be able to complete this set.

3.  My all time favorite band is Marillion, a prog rock band out of England.  They had a  hit in the  198s with Kayleigh, and have been putting out great  albums ever since.   Every other year they have Marillion Weekends  where they play for 3 nights.   I always wanted to attend on of the weekends but unfortunately, they do not have a  weekend in  the  United States  (Closest to my would be  Montreal, Canada.  I would love to take a few  friends and attend one of the  upcoming weekends, and the money I win on  Survivor would help make this a reality.

4. I do need a new car. My 2012 Honda Insight Hybrid is on its last legs. Besides some rust and the paint peeling off, the headlights have condensation inside making them pretty much worthless. I want to get another hybrid, or even a fully electric car, and having some extra  money would help with the process.

76675efd-9b7e-4743-a058-d9d66898fb0b-12755-0000085acfe6d3e4_file

5.  I always thought it would be cool to help people out.  I would  love to go to a restaurant and tell the owner that I will cover everybody’s meals.   I would tell the owner that when people request their bills, let them know its been covered.  No need to tell them by who.  I would also like to stop when I see one of those giant donation thermometers, and pay of  what ever is needed to complete their goal.   And I am sure that I would  donate some money to groups or charities that I believe in

6. As a big sports fan, I would love to take a trip to see some of the special sporting events for sports like tennis (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon) (Being from New Jersey, the US Open is close enough that I could  go for the day) or Golf (Masters, US Open, British Open, and the PGA Championship).  Would be a fun way to see other countries and cities while seeing some great sporting action.   Would also like to try and go some more baseball games and see  some of the newer stadiums.

7.  I just finished reading Andrew  McCarthys’ book  “Brat: an 80s  Story” and really enjoyed it.  Always liked him it “St. Elmos Fire“, still one of my  favorite  movies.  Recently he and is some walked the  Camino de Santiago  – A 500  mile hike month long hike across Spain.  There was also a movie called  “The  Way” about this staring Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez.   Since seeing the move I wanted to give this a try, and now following Andrew McCarthy and his son on Facebook, I’m even more inspired to give this a try.

8. I would love to take my wife and daughter on a trip.  Wherever they want to go would be fine with me.  If they want to go to Universal Studios to see Harry Potter World, or back to Disneyworld for rides and fun, that would work.  Or if they want to go to Yellowstone Park for hiking and  sightseeing, that would be fine.  Or maybe a trip back to  California to see family.  Would like to be able to  go and enjoy ourselves, and not  worry about the  cost.  Not going  super upscale or  fancy, just a regular trip, but not have to worry about getting that souvenir photo, or 2nd beer to try  and save some money

I am sure there are other things I forgot, or need to get once I return as the winner. But these are things I think and dream about and hopefully someday will become reality. Never to old to stop dreaming and believing.

Lets give Corporate Rock some love

I’m a big fan of so called “Corporate Rock”. Bands such as Boston, Styx, Kansas, and Foreigner. These bands have tons on classic songs that are played on the radio every day, yet they get no love from both critics and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Here are a few of my thoughts / memories of each of these bands

Boston

45 Years ago, the classic self titled Boston album was released, and it went on to become one of the highest selling debut albums of all times. Over the years they have released 5 more albums and I am a big fan of them all. Even the death of singer Brad Delp in 2007, the band has continued on. I have seen them numerous times and have great memories of each time, including when I scored 1st row tickets when they played Musikfest in Bethlehem PA. The ironic thing is I have never seen them live in the city of Boston. Maybe next time they tour I’ll get a chance.

Tom Scholz – 45 Years of Boston

Styx

Another classic band with tons of songs that are still going strong today. From the beginning with singer Dennis DeYong, to the current lineup with Tommy Shaw, James Young, and Lawrence Gowan, they continue to play to sold out shows. Songs such as “Come Sail Away”, “The Grand Illusion”, and “Blue Collar Man” have become staples on the radio. I’ve seen both Styx and Dennis DeYoung in concert and they were great shows. Lately I have been watching YouTube videos of young peoples reaction to listening to Styx songs for the 1st time.

Kansas

One of the greates US Prog Bands, Kansas has been putting out albums since 1974. Songs like “Carry on Wayward Son” and “Point of Know Return” have become classics. I’m also a fan of there later albums like “Power” and “In the Spirit of Things”. I never saw Kansas live as the two times I attempted to see them were cancelled (once for lightning and once for personal issues with the band). And who doesn’t know their classic song “Dust in the Wind”. Here is a great bit by James Cordin and Jim Parsons on the Late Late Show

Foreigner

Even with most of the original members like Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner retired and no longer playing in the band, they continue to tour and bring joy to millions of fans. Singer Kelly Hansen has taken over and does a great job. Songs like “Feels like the First Time”, “Double Vision” and “Urgent” continue to be played today and sound fresh and current. Here a cool version of their great some “I Want to Know What Love Is” with the Retro Festival Orchestra and 21st Century Choir

All these bands have a special meaning to me, and I’m guessing a special meaning for the millions of fans who have seen them live in concert, or bought one of their albums. Its time for the critics to get over themselves and acknowledge that these are all great musicians and while the band members are not the most flamboyant or recognizable, that shouldn’t matter.

As far as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they need to acknowledge Corporate Rock (as well as Heavy / Hair Metal) as legitimate styles of Music and give them the credit they deserve. Constant air play, along with selling millions of albums and playing to millions of fans has to count for something.

RIP Charlie Watts – Drummer for the Rolling Stones

Sad to see that Charlie Watts, drummer with the Rolling Stones passed away at the age of 80s. While I was not a huge Rolling Stones fan, there is no argument that they were one of the worlds greatest Rock and Roll Band. I never saw them live, but did enjoy a lot of their songs.

Was listening to SiriusXm (Eddie Trunk on Volume 106) and he said what I thought – That people believed the Rolling Stones would be around forever and out last us all.

I have so many memories that involve the Rolling Stones – Their music was played at many weddings I have attended. I remember listening to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” taking the bus from college to NYC and thinking what a great song. And when I think of the Rolling Stones, I think of the scene from “Bad News Bears” where Amanda Whurlitz loses at Air Hockey to Kelly Leak and has to go to the Rolling Stones Concert

I realize that the Stones and lot of the classic rock stars are getting up in age. Hopefully the rest of the band members, as all of the other ageing classic rock starts are around for many more years.

Will right some more later this evening, but wanted to give Charlie Watts his own post
